Sunday Dog Days and Pug O Ween

Yes it is the dog days of Sunday here.  The weather is nice so the back door is open.  And three of the doggies are laying in front of the open door, two are sleeping but Chester is checking out the goings on in the backyard.
We are checking are calendar to see if we are free for DFW Pug Rescue's  fun fund-raising event - the Annual Pug-O-Ween.
10689833_764824166912828_4461773836970512424_nOctober 26, 2014 is the 18th Annual Pug-O-Ween.  11 a.m. to 4 p.m at the Grapevine, TX Convention Center.  Admission price is $8 for adults and $4 for children.  Come see the fun, enter your animal family (doesn't have to be a pug) or come adopt a deserving, loving pug.
This year we are in limbo, so we can't contemplate participation or making costumes.  The foster pug and bug are disappointed. Okay the Bug, Ambrosia - pug and boston terrier is Not disappointed.  She has seen my posts of doggies in costume, she is not a fan.

Couch
But  Pippa (aka Madlina in pug rescue records) is disappointed.  She wants everyone to know that she is cute and that her collapsing trachea isn't holding her back. And she wants to meet Couch, a special needs pug with the same issue.
Couch is adorable and needs some donations to help with her medical expenses.
Here is a darling pug that needs a forever loving home, Hula. Meet Hula! She is a little Hula girl. She is around 7 years old. She dances around waiting to find you. She is an absolute little doll.
Hula-1
Hula
She had a very bad life of being a breeder girl and that life is now gone forever. Her little eyes were so damaged and blind that they had to be removed. She is a trooper and is recovering great. Thanks to DFW Pug Rescue for saving Hula and her friends. She is available for a forever home and you can inquire at www.dfwpugs.com.
You don’t know what you are missing until you own a blind pug and welcome them in your home as a new family member. Most rewarding experience ever!!

I have to go - Someone just let out the alert that they have seen a squirrel. Everyone is answering the call to duty (except the parakeets). We must make the yard safe for caninekind.  Happy trails and tails.

BE THE CHANGE.

Ground Hog and Super Bowl Day. What is the Family doing?

024This morning everyone in the family is chilly. Why does it keep getting cold? And only 1 and 1/2 of us doggies like the cold. Jax may like the cold but Chester doesn't anymore, he used to love it but he is still miffed about getting a shaving.

"If he'd stop playing in mud and getting himself matted he'd have a coat."   Mind your own business M.G.

"Wait did someone say chili?"  No we are all vegetarians. We strive to live cruelty free.

And that means no snide comments about your brother M.G.

Now the electricity just went off and on, we don't know why and we don't like when this happens. There is a disturbance in the force, the TV stops making sounds and we were watching Animal Planet - Too Cute.

My friend Ku is getting rain and put on his raincoat.

Speedy is resting up for his big party.
Speedy is resting for his party.
Speedy is resting up for his big party.[/caption] Speedy asked us earlier in the week to go by his main blog, he is posting pictures of bunnies giving disapproving looks. And Speedy is getting ready for a big party to celebrate being with his mommy and daddy for 2 years.

We are all happy for this cheeky rabbit and his family. Well except the parakeets, they are very self-centered.

Hope shunning Happy
Hope shunning Happy.
"If the saw the parakeets they would see Hope shunning and disapproving Happy."

Bongo is worried no one will read his blog because of the Super Bowl and the Ground Hog.

I told him that I read his post, I read his Sunday school lesson and don't worry about ground hogs and super bowls. Today we watch the "Cute-a-thon" and the Puppy Bowl. "

Bowl? More food! Yippee, thank you. I am dancing on my hind legs here Mom, I want a bowl of food!"

"Me too!" "Me too!" "Me too!"

"Stupid kids, they hear the word bowl or treat and start jumping around like idiots."

Ambrosia, don't call your brothers and sisters stupid.

And it isn't that type of bowl. I don't know why they call it a bowl, they just do. We are going to watch puppies play games on TV. And those puppies need homes, just like you did before I found you.

Now the Ground Hog is named Phil and he is from Punxsutawney.

We have relatives from Punxsy but they don't live there anymore. They probably moved because it is difficult to spell.

Phil has been predicting the weather since 1887. Boy oh boy Phil is old. I hope he is treated with special love and care.

Phil is the official predictor of whether there will be six more weeks of winter. Apparently there are logs of unofficial ground hogs running around and looking for shadows.

So today we cuddle and watch Puppies on TV. The parakeets can watch as well but they just don't care - they are too busy talking and singing.

And no M.G. don't say anything. It is puppy bowl time.

Donate and Pray for Evie

So many animals deserve and need our help. Here is a girl in desperate need. Please Be the Change. Be that Person.

http://www.youcaring.com/pet-expenses/urgent-immediate-need-for-evie/107044

This is footage of our visit with Evie at the hospital today. Evie was found inside an apartment complex dumpster - stuffed into a sealed plastic tub. Seizing, dehydrated and presenting with a myriad of severe neurological symptoms when she arrived to the Fort Worth shelter on 11.15.13. ("swimming", miotic pupils, non-responsive and with a significant fever of 105).

Tossed away like garbage ~ left to die an agonizing, terror-filled death. Evie was quickly sent to rescue and rushed to the ER hospital where she remains - in critical condition, receiving supportive care, seizure management and is under 'round the clock observation in ICU.

Help us find Evie's abusers and bring them to justice! For more information and updates on Evie's condition - click here: https://www.youcaring.com/SavingEvie
https://www.facebook.com/FriendsOfEmmaCleftPalateChihuahua

**UPDATE** Evie's sodium levels have DROPPED again!! YAY!! Right now, she is at 163 - which is the lowest she's been yet! (normal range is around 150) This is a HUGE advancement for Evie! ♥ She obviously is still affected.... there is no telling at this point just how much permanent damage her brain has suffered. It has been confirmed at this point - that Evie has absolutely zero vision due to her traumatic experience. She is very likely - totally and permanently blind. :( She continues to eat well - and is resting more peacefully when she does rest. Doc opted to not move forward with the sedation as we had previously discussed - since she has calmed somewhat and her respiratory is already quite low - so we don't want to add to that and run into problems with her breathing atop everything else she has going on. Evie still cannot stand / walk / sit or hold herself up. She has no balance / coordination due to the brain trauma.... it is too early to tell whether that will improve. Doc says not to be "too optimistic" at this point - but she is showing some SLIGHT signs of alertness - vs. the totally unresponsive state she has been in since her arrival. We will visit later today and will update upon our return. Obviously, Evie as well - requires additional funding to maintain her ongoing ICU stay... please visit her fundraising page below to assist us with those expenses if you can. ♥ https://www.youcaring.com/SavingEvie

Dogs Dressed Up - Part 3 DFW Pug-O-Ween

More Dress Up. Let me say that if your animal is uncomfortable or frighten with being dressed up - don't dress them up. We should not cause distress to those in our care because it amuses humans.  You see a lot of pug pictures in these posts.  That is because pugs in general don't seem to mind if their people like to dress them in funny clothes and I am a foster parent (for the hospice dogs) for DFW Pug Rescue. The have wonderful events and one is Pug-O-Ween.  Below are winners from Pug-O-Ween events. Please donate if you can.

MY FAVORITE IS THREE PUGS IN A TUB. MAKES ME SMILE!

Dogs and other animal companions Dressed Up - Part 2

Dogs dressed up is a post of photos I have found of our loving animal companions in costume. Do they we do this out of some parenting need? Are we weird? Do the dogs put up with the clothing, allow the costumes to please us or do they like dressing in doggie drag?
.

This is Grammie, available for adoption from DFW Pug Rescue. She is a sweetie - cupcake.

This is Freckles, what an angel!

Dogs (and other animal companions) Dressed Up - Part 1

Dogs dressed up is a post of photos I have found of our loving animal companions in costume. Do they we do this out of some parenting need? Are we weird? Do the dogs put up with the clothing, allow the costumes to please us or do they like dressing in doggie drag?

Well, I know that my sweet Cleveland loved to wear his collar, a hat and he would smile for the camera.

Jelly Bean dressed as a skeleton.

Both of my sweet babies, RIP, Pookie Above and Sophie below had Pirate do-rags for Halloween.

DFW Pug Rescue Fund Raising Event had a kissing booth.

Remember Rosie and Adopt

Rosie
I introduced Rosie in my post Rescue Stories: Rosie. Rosie and her loving mom, Cinnamon, have become a strong voice against puppy mills.

Recently and unexpectedly sweet Rosie died. Cinnamon is devastated as any of us that have lost a beloved companion understand.  I am still grieving for Jelly Bean and I often cry in sadness and joy for all my other darling babies (my dogs) I have lost. This blog is dedicated to the memory of one of my special needs girls I had to let go a year ago, Sophie .

With the death of Rosie, Cinnamon has received condolences and messages.  Apparently some fans of Rosie and the icon she has become have spoken of breeding their dog and naming a puppy after her. A link to the page Everything Rosie is below.

Be The Change. Sometimes the Difference Between Life and Death IS YOU!

Sophie
Even in grief Cinnamon has remained an staunch advocate against puppy mills and for animal rights.  I want to share one of her facebook posts to help spread the word.

Quote from Cinnamon on Everything Rosie Facebook :

Rosie was and always will be beautiful to me. I see a spectacular otherworldly creature from a children’s storybook when I look at her pictures and she radiated something magical when she was in my arms. HOWEVER…what I also see and remember is how those little legs didn’t work as well as she wanted them to and as well as they should have. I see the joy she can hardly contain but can’t fully express. I see a face I dearly loved and will go to my grave loving; yet, I also see the face of a dog that entered this world through a toxic gene pool because of greed and ignorance.

So please understand why I am worried and disturbed to receive emails from people saying they are going to breed their dog and name a pup after Rosie. Please understand that my head and heart ache when people write to say it is such a shame she never had puppies. I know those folks mean well.
Rosie and I made the best of what she had, and with an army of assistance, we still couldn’t repair the damage wrought by greed, ignorance and neglect. Please look at Rosie’s video and celebrate her life. Please promise her that you will never let another animal come into the world this way. Make her life have meaning and purpose.”
Soon a worldwide memorial will be held in celebration of Rosie's life and to bring awareness to the plight of dogs bred in puppy mills. Cinnamon has asked you "Make her life (Rosie) have meaning and purpose."

I also ask you to make Rosie's life have meaning  and purpose.  Make my sweet Jelly Bean and Sophie, puppy mill rescues with Congenital birth defects. So many animals have suffered due to the greed and inhumanity of humans.

Please be aware and raise awareness.  As I always ask and say: Be The Change. Sometimes the Difference Between Life and Death IS YOU!
BE THE CHANGE!

How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Berns. My Pre Order from Coming Soon and Dogs and Animal Rights arrived!  So very first thing this morning I am reading because I love books - and dogs!

"Callie was dancing in the lab.  Zooming from person to person, the little black village dog with the energy of a rocket knew that all the months of training had led to this moment.  Her eyes sparkled with life, and her rat-tail wagged side to side with such intensity that her head moved in exactly the opposite direction.  She was ready."

Great Dog Book Coming Soon!

Andrea Reads and Reviews Recommends this new book available October 22, 2013.

How Dogs Love Us: A Neuroscientist and His Adopted Dog Decode the Canine Brain by Gregory Berns. Recommended by me as a Dog Lover.

The powerful bond between humans and dogs is one that’s uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and affectionate, they are truly “man’s best friend.”

But do dogs love us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at him: What is my dog thinking?

After his family adopted Callie, a shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way to answer that question—use an MRI machine to scan the dog’s brain. His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an MRI scanner.

With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral hurdles. Berns’s research offers surprising results on how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom.

How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love, respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional intelligence.

Friends & Liebster Peeps - Check this out!

My blogger blog, Andrea Reads and Reviews was nominated for Liebster and my wordpress blog Reviews Books and More was nominated separately.

Here in Blogger I have found so many animal lovers and great blogs.

In the post I nominated several animal lover blogs. One nominee was Three Pugs by Stella Rose.

The pug answered my questions and she did a beautiful job. Fun and funny.

Stop by and read Stella the Pug's answers. Broaden your horizons and laugh.

Laughter and love from me. And my 2 pugs, 1 bug, 2 parakeets, the collective fish, 1 terrier mix, 1 shih Tzu and one beautiful Corgi, poodle, sheltie mix. We are not as funny as Three Pugs but sometimes we get the giggles and sometimes someone pees.

P.S. All family members are rescued and adopted except the Tzu. Chester came to the family via a step sister to help fill my broken heart after I had to let my dear Pepper go after 17 years. I can say that I often talk about the family in Dog Blogs!

Dogs are Angels. Say A Prayer.

Today say a prayer for all animals. Pray humans act humanely.

Pray their Guardians love and care for them.

And be Thankful.

Today I am thankful for all the dogs that have blessed me.

I deeply miss and love the ones that are dead.

I love and cherish the companions "the little boogers" that share my life with me now.

Well time to go - P is barking and if my dog translator is accurate she is saying, "You have JB, A and MG in the chair with you.  That is 3.  I am 1.  Stop ignoring me and pick me up.  Now would be good."

P is right.  She is one (1).

And every 1 animal is precious. Every animal deserves & requires love and care.
